But what is automation and what do you need?
Automation can include Industry 4.0/Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) initiatives such as digital transformation, flexible production, and smart manufacturing. It can also include industrial scanning and machine vision cameras. Still, it could mean implementing cobots and robots – which require end-of-arm tooling. All of these are areas to consider, especially as companies are finding it harder to find skilled workers to run machines.
Yet it goes beyond that. Whether you have one machine or multiple factories, automation solutions are vast and varied depending on the need, and they should also scale with a company – whether it’s the cobot/robot, EOAT, Industry 4.0/IIoT. The goals of automation are to increase production, accuracy, visibility, traceability, and overall efficiency for any size operation.

Larry joined SMW Autoblok in 2007 as National Sales Manager and recently was appointed President in 2019. As president for SMW Autoblok’s commercial division, Larry is responsible for all strategic sales and marketing initiatives as well as overseeing SMW Autoblok’s North America sales team and customer base including machine tool dealers and OEM’s. He also oversees various projects internationally. Larry has over 35 years of experience in machine tool manufacturing and prior to working for SMW Autoblok, he owned a successful manufacturers’ rep company for 13 years. Larry’s expertise in the machining industry began in his early youth when he worked side-by-side his father who owned a prosperous distributorship in New York. Jeff Kalmbach (General Manager, Machine Tools Division @Murata Machinery USA/Muratec) Jeff Kalmbach is an experienced manufacturing leader with an extensive background in engineering, operations, services, automation, and customer interactions. Jeff joined Murata Machinery USA/Muratec in 2006 as the Engineering Manager for the Machine Tools Division and has held various positions within the company before moving to the position of General Manager of the Machine Tools Division. Before working for Murata Machinery USA, Jeff held various Advanced Manufacturing Engineering positions developing and implementing high-volume automated machining and assembly lines. Jeff leads all aspects of Murata Machinery’s Machine Tools business in North America, comprising Muratec’s Turning and Fabrication Business Units. Muratec’s Turning Business Unit focuses on an extensive line of CNC turning machines and high-speed automation, while the company’s Fabrication Business Unit specializes in applications, service, and sales of turret punch presses and fiber lasers.
